Growing up in Hollis, Queens there weren’t many examples of representation outside of the cliche boxes society defaults to for Black men. While my interests have always been widespread, I never felt quite right in any one group. I did a lot of things that we just “didn’t do”. The outdoors, less popular sports and niche hobbies do not belong to any particular race. I can understand why it would seem that way to some when there’s a lack of representation. I love to see people I grew up with asking me questions about bikes or where a trail is. I want to help eliminate those barriers that we quickly put up, as a reason to not do something. You might come to have a passion for something that you haven’t tried yet. The bicycle exposed me to so many great things I want to pay it forward! Bike, hike, camp and explore with me.
